Ramadan's blessing dates

Tonight is Ramadan's night. Mom is preparing our "sohour" right now.

The holy month is commonly known with being special and different; it's known for spirituality, getting closer to family, and having our iftar with them; we all go break our fast and eat at the same time, also it's known for its oriental sweets that we usually eat plenty of. And usually the first thing that touches our saliva is water and dates...

Dates are served and eaten during the breaking of our fast following our prophet. You know that the sweetness of the date takes the edge off hunger?Yes, dates contain a lot of sugar with less fat and easily digested so they raise the energy in your body instantly and prevent you from overeating.

In the Holy Koran, dates and date palms have been mentioned more than 20 times. Also our prophet recommended us to consume dates regularly due to their high nutritive value. "Homes without dates is as good as a home without food" Our prophet -peace be upon him- said. . He also told us that only taking 4-5 dates in a meal can fulfill your energy requirement

I've always known that dates are those important fruits taken fresh or dried especially in the holy month so I decided to search for its benefits and why had our prophet urged us to eat them regularly?

Dates are rich in natural fibers which prevent abdominal cancer. Also they are used in treating respiratory and heart diseases and anemia as well as the prevention of cancer diseases. And they are known for their effect on insomnia, so you don't have any excuse for staying awake all night, Go for dates and you'll be OK.

There are lots of other vitamins and minerals found in dates including sulphur, potassium, iron and copper all of which contribute to a healthy body and mind.

Also it contains traces of calcium and magnesium, which are good for bone growth.

It's advisable for pregnant women and women who are feeding their children to eat dates. It has been mentioned in Quran relating to the story of Marium;the mother of Isa(the prophet) when God ordered her to eat dates to make the delivery easy, comfortable and with less pain.

Dry fig, apricot, Qrsia(dried plum) and kamar el den are also important for the body. According to research done in western countries dry fruits are very good for health.

So now go eating dates and our beloved oriental sweets and remember they still contain carbohydrates and natural sugar so don't over-eat them. Ramadan is all about maintaining health and balanced meals. Enjoy Ramadan this summer and stay health
